CAT'S A BEAR: 1986     [ Nathan Griffith ]

A straight ahead jazz trio, this tape features the compositions of the guitarist, Frank Singer. His style compares favorably to old George Benson for a sense of clarity and tone, while his clever virtuosity reflects that of Full House-era Larry Coryell. Bassist Bob Dorris has a command of the fingerboard that allows him a full run of notes at breakneck speed, while drummer Joe Dorris creates killer chops composed of highly varied tones. While mostly in the vein of Coryell or even Joe Farrell (one tune is by him), there is an added twist in Singer's tendency toward drastic and multiple rhythmic alterations within each piece—something more in line with the likes of James Blood Ulmer or Ronald Shannon Jackson, (Frank Singer, 11 0lmstead St. #2, Jamaica Plain, MA 02130)—Nathan Griffith
