Pentatonic scales are five-note scales. The minor pentatonic scale conforms to the following scale formula:

scale degree [ formula ] 1 b3 4 5 b7
solfege syllable do me fa sol te
key of C [ C minor pentatonic ] C Eb F G Bb

The minor pentatonic scale contains all four notes of the minor seventh chord (1-b3-5-b7). The additional tone, scale-degree four, is the simple-interval equivalent of tension eleven, which is always available as a tension on a minor seventh chord. In this sense, the minor pentatonic scale compliments the minor seventh chord perfectly, thus, this is one application for the scale.
The table below shows this and many other applications.

*NOTE: Minor Pentatonic scales and Blues scales are virtually always compatible; where one works, so will the other. The overlay relationships are more sensitive. Experimentation is recommended.
