SATIN DOLL
Tritonic Reharmonization
|
Satin Doll follows an A
A B A form. I use
the standard key of C major for this reharm. Most of the reharmonization uses
the tritonic grouping C, E, and Ab. The Bb, Gb, D grouping begins the B section,
but the II V I in D is presented in minor, and the D-7 returns to the key of C
and its tritonic companions. This also maintains the up-a-whole-step movement in
the original chart from bars one through four to bars five through eight of the
B section.
I found that adjusting
the melody in the A sections, by making the lower neighbor in the first four
bars a half-step below instead of a whole-step below, smoothed out the
melody-harmony relationships . They then function as chromatic approaches from
below [ more
], viewing the C as a C6, and the A# - B on the Eb7 as 5, b13, or as a
chromatic approach on an altered 5 chord.
There is a coda for this one.
The melody repeats with the harmony for the tag. I also use the stock ending, but end on a Cmaj7#5 to bring out the
G# as the continuation of the F - F# - G part of the line. Here are my
changes:
|
A
C | F#-7 B7 |
E G7 | C Eb7
| Ab B7 | E G7 |
C Eb7 | Ab G7b9 ||
A C |
F#-7 B7 | E G7 |
C Eb7
| Ab B7 | E G7 |
C Eb7 | Ab G7b9 ||
B C-7 F7 |
Bb Db7 | Gb |

| D-7 G7 | C Eb7 |
Ab B7 | E G7 ||
A C |
F#-7 B7 | E G7 |
C Eb7
| Ab B7 | E G7 |
C Eb7 | Ab G7b9 ||
The tag begins two bars before the end of the
last A section as a
coda, which follows:
Coda
C-7 F7
| Bb-7 Eb7 || Ab B7
| E G7b9 | C-7 F7 |
Bb-7 Eb7 | Ab B7
| E G7b9 | C (stock ending)
Cmaj7#5 ||
The
dominant chords should be altered according to the melody when playing
the head in bars four (Eb7b13), five (B7b9), and six (G7b9) of the A
sections, and bars two (Db7alt), six (Eb7alt), and seven (B7b9) of the B
section. Have fun! [ top ]
